Roil: to move turbulently : be in a state of turbulence or agitation (conflicting emotions roiling inside her)

I used the world roil in conversation this week and the person I was speaking to was startled.  He said he had not heard it used in common speech before.  I am only glad that he knew what I meant.  There is something so satisfying about finding the word that most precisely conveys my meaning.  It makes me feel free and fully expressed.  But since the point of speaking is not just to express what you mean but to be understood as well, and since most people access a very limited subset of English vocabulary, I often feel constrained.

Three morals in this story,

1. There may be 50 shades of grey but do we have the vocabulary to describe the distinctions?
2. It’s a shame to have so many exquisite words in the English language and use so few of them.
3. I’m all for bringing more of the esoteric into the everyday.

Yours with creativity and imagination,

Darlene
